It is common for Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses to be required in secondary education. But, for some kids waiting until then to start learning these technical skills can be too late. Secondary Ed CTE courses are fast-paced and require students to advance quickly. While there are personalities who are able to thrive in these classes, there are others who will find the speed of the course too challenging and write off computer science as an interest or future career. 

This is why it’s important to engage kids in technology, such as computer science, at a young age–even as young as Kindergarten. And for those who haven’t had an opportunity to learn computer science at a young age, it’s vital to have educational tools that help them ease into coding and learning the computer science skills and concepts. 

With that, we’re excited to announce our new program: Flight Training.

Flight Training is a block-coding platform that provides introductory programming experiences to our young learners in computer science. In the platform, teachers can find step-by-step lesson plans, students can find coding challenges with fun descriptions and requirements, and enjoy an open playground to create and save animations. 

“We wanted to give our young students in computer science hands-on coding experiences in addition to the unplugged activities, games, and discussion points,” Bree Yocum, Curriculum Developer at Skill Struck, said. “The block coding platform supports our young students in learning coding principles.”

This new platform will not only help engage young students in computer science but will also help them develop problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking skills by using block-based coding. Click here to get an overview of Flight Training.

Implementing Flight Training into your classroom

Flight Training will be added to Skill Struck’s Launch Pad starting the 2022-2023 school year. With this addition, teachers will find supplemental resources and lessons within the platform.

Flight Training was built with K-2 students in mind, but can be used with any other grade level. If your students have never been exposed to coding before, Flight Training is a great way to get started and have some fun.
